Hive is a site-specific installation and a public artwork commission by Nancy Davidson and Lakshmi Ramgopal, at Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois.
The installation consists of two large inflatable sculptures in conversation. I was commissioned to create a custom lighting system that could visualize this abstract dialog. Using a Raspberry Pi, wireless DMX, and RGB LEDs, I developed electronics and software that allow the sculptures to communicate through shared data. A custom generative timing system drives organic call and response lighting animations between the two sculptures. After prototyping, I worked with Nancy to finalize the color palette and the overall timing of the piece.
